FWP Region 7 · southeast Montana

Hunting around Terry

Mule deer in the breaks, pronghorn on the flats and upland birds along the river bottoms. Most of the ground is private, so plan ahead.

What’s here

Big game on the breaks, birds in the bottoms

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks describes its southeast region as having excellent mule deer and antelope hunting, along with upland birds and waterfowl.

Mule deer and pronghorn

Mule deer work the broken country along the badlands and river breaks; pronghorn (most locals say antelope) cover the open prairie and the wheat and hay ground around it. Licences and permits are drawn or sold through FWP, and the rules change each year.

Upland birds

  • Ring-necked pheasant
  • Sharp-tailed grouse
  • Sage grouse
  • Hungarian partridge
  • Merriam’s turkey
  • Mourning dove

Ducks and geese use the Yellowstone too. Fallon Bridge fishing access allows archery and shotgun hunting in season.

Before you come

Most of the ground is private. Plan for it.

  1. Get permission first

About three quarters of FWP’s Region 7 is private land. Knock on doors well before the season, and never assume an open gate means you’re welcome.

  2. Look at Block Management

FWP’s Block Management program opens private ranches to public hunting, with rules for each area. Maps come out before the season.

  3. Sort out licences

FWP’s regional office is in Miles City, about 40 minutes west: 352 I-94 Business Loop, (406) 234-0900, weekdays 8 to 5.
